Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation), which is a reaction that oxidizes ammonium to dinitrogen gas using nitrite as the electron acceptor under anoxic conditions, was an important discovery in the nitrogen cycle. The reaction is mediated by a specialized group of planctomycete-like bacteria that were first discovered in man-made ecosystems.

Anammox bacteria perform anaerobic ammonium oxidation in three consecutive reactions: the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide, the condensation of nitric oxide and ammonium to the “rocket fuel” hydrazine, and the oxidation of hydrazine to dinitrogen gas (Fig. 4).The oxidation of hydrazine releases four electrons that are proposed to be transferred to a membrane-bound cytochrome bc1 complex. The group of bacteria able to perform the anammox reaction was then identified at Delft University (van der Graaf et al., 1996), and also found back in other treatment plants showing that it was more commonly present than previously thought. Anammox bacteria are slow growers and they have a doubling time of 11-20 days (Strous et al., 1999). 2020-10-01 designed to conducting the anammox reaction only.

The reaction is mediated by a specialized group of planctomycete-like bacteria that were first discovered in man-made ecosystems. The anammox process occurs under anaerobic conditions by bacterial mediated combination of NO 2 with NH 4. The reaction was first suggested by Richards (1965) and first shown directly to occur in wastewater bioreactors (Mulder et al., 1995).

Performed research confirmed a hypothesis, that the oxygen concentration in the bulk liquid and the nitrite production rate are the limiting factors for the Anammox reaction in a single reactor. Abstract Bacteria performing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) are key players in the global nitrogen cycle due to their inherent ability to convert biologically available nitrogen to N2. The performance of the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) process was investigated in two identical sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) [designated as SBR1 (tourmaline addition) and SBR2 (check reactor)] at nitrogen loading rates (NLRs) varying from 0.73 to 4.90 g N / (L · d) and constant hydraulic retention time of 6 h.

Anammox metabolism resides in a special and unique cell organelle, the anammoxosome.
